1. Colours next to each other on the colour wheel = harmonious and therefore not bright, more subdued
2. Colours opposite each other (and in same segment) = brighter
I.e green against red or any colour containing red, i.e. orange, maroon, pink, crimson
Create a focal point: If the rest of the painting is subdued greys then doing 2 above will create a dazzling focal point.
Maximise this effect in your impimatura (paint entire canvas lightly before drawing) by
imprimatura = red
landscape = green
