Make colours appear brighter

1. Colours next to each other on the colour wheel = harmonious and therefore not bright, more subdued

2. Colours opposite each other (and in same segment) = brighter

I.e green against red or any colour containing red, i.e. orange, maroon, pink, crimson

Create a focal point: If the rest of the painting is subdued greys then doing 2 above will create a dazzling focal point.

Maximise this effect in your impimatura (paint entire canvas lightly before drawing) by

imprimatura = red

landscape = green
